little duck, calling him, as the title would suggest, a sissy. Ashamed, brutalized and burdened with the knowledge that he was a disappointment to his big, butch father, he decides to run away.

When the rest of the ducks leave to fly south for the winter, however, his father is wounded by a hunter, and Elmer emerges from his hiding place, carries his father home and nurses him back to health. When everyone returns in the spring, suddenly Elmer the sissy is Elmer the hero.

The Calico Buffalo, similarly themed, is about a calf born to the chieftain of the

Gay parenting is a timely subject, with Alabama Supreme Court justices making asses of themselves in their concurring decisions and talk show hosts leaving their posts to take care of their pregnant partners. From Dr. Spock to "time out," there is plenty written about how to raise children. A better question is, other than Heather Has Two Mommies and other assorted Lesléa Newman children's books and Michael Willhoite's Daddy's Roommate, what is one to read the little nippers at bedtime? and actor best known perhaps for his witty and tearful Torch Song Trilogy, has one answer: The Sissy Duckling.

Originally done as a children's cartoon for the HBO cable network, the book relates the story of Elmer, "the happiest duckling in the whole forest.

""

Elmer had fun doing all his little ducky things; the problem was, they were girly ducky things. Everyone made fun of the poor

Buffalo Nation. He and his wife are shocked when the baby comes out and has patches and splashes of color all over his body.

The evil, conniving Thorn foils their plan to paint the child with mud so that he looks like the other buffalo, but instead of rushing to make Thorn the chieftain, the elders decide to take a long trek to the frozen north to find the Ancient, the progenitor of their kind, and ask her advice on the matter.

Flip forward about twenty pages, and the reader finds out that the Ancient is, of course, a calico buffalo as well.

Where The Sissy Duckling is told in a normal children's prose style, The Calico Buffalo is more an epic poem for children, with a definite feel that it could have been taken from Native American folklore. The pictures are less the focus of this book than in other children's stories; the lilting, rhyming verses are the center of the story.

Both, however, should be welcome in any home with children, teaching at an early age that the differences separating ducks or buffalo are not nearly as great as the things which bind them together.
